chances of progressing to the quarter-finals were dealt an early blow when Jordan Henderson was forced off with a foot injury.
Henderson, Liverpool's captain, went down in agony after 12 minutes and only got back up to be replaced by Fabinho.
James Milner took the captaincy but there was considerable concern from Jurgen Klopp
and Liverpool supporters at the severity of Henderson's injury.
Henderson has suffered from foot injuries before. He fractured his foot 10 years ago and more recently was ruled out of the rest of the 2016/17 season again after injuring the same part of his body.
But his absence didn't halt Liverpool's first-half progress as they soon found a way to get the better of Bayern Munich.
Sadio Mane capitalised after he was set up by Virgil van Dijk following poor defending by the German champions.
